Things to Do in Nepal — The Essential List
Nepal packs an absurd amount of world-class experience into a country the size of England: eight of the planet's fourteen highest peaks, tiger-and-rhino jungle, living medieval cities, and the best-value adventure sports anywhere. Here's the essential list, organised by region, so you can shape a trip around what matters to you.
Trek the Himalaya
Trekking is Nepal's headline act, and no other country does it better — established trails, teahouse lodges every few hours, and scenery that resets your sense of scale.
- Everest region — Namche Bazaar, Sherpa culture and the classic walk to Base Camp.
- Annapurna region — the most varied: from the short hikes near Pokhara to Poon Hill sunrises and the full Circuit.
- Langtang — closest big-mountain trekking to Kathmandu, refreshingly quiet.

Explore the Kathmandu Valley
The valley holds seven UNESCO World Heritage sites within an hour of each other: the medieval Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur; the great stupas of Boudhanath and Swayambhunath; and the sacred temple complexes of Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan. Give it two or three days — wandering Bhaktapur's pottery squares at dawn or joining the evening kora at Boudha are among Asia's great travel moments.
Safari in the Jungle Lowlands
The Terai's national parks deliver genuine wildlife drama. Chitwan is the accessible classic — one-horned rhinos all but guaranteed on a jeep safari, plus gharial crocodiles, sloth bears and 500+ bird species. Bardia, far to the west, is wilder and the better bet for tigers.
Adventure Sports
Nepal's adventure-sport price-to-thrill ratio is unbeatable:
- Paragliding over Phewa Lake in Pokhara — among the world's top flying sites.
- Whitewater rafting — the Trishuli (easy access), Bhote Koshi (intense) or multi-day Sun Koshi expeditions.
- Bungee and canyon swings at the Bhote Koshi gorge.
- Mountain biking the valley rim trails or the Mustang jeep roads.
Spiritual Nepal
Beyond sightseeing: meditation and yoga retreats around Kathmandu and Pokhara, monastery stays in Boudha, and Lumbini — the birthplace of the Buddha — anchoring the southern plains with its garden of international monasteries.
Where to Base Yourself
| Base | Best for | | --- | --- | | Kathmandu | Culture, heritage, food — see where to eat | | Pokhara | Adventure sports, lakes, trek staging — see things to do in Pokhara | | Chitwan | Wildlife | | Lumbini | Pilgrimage, Buddhist history |
