Best Short Hikes Near Pokhara

You don't need three weeks and a duffel bag to walk in the Annapurnas. Some of the range's best views are accessible on day hikes and two-to-four-day loops starting within an hour of Pokhara — proper trails, teahouse lunches, and Machhapuchhre filling the horizon. Here are the routes worth your boots, easiest first.

World Peace Pagoda Loop — Half Day

2–3 hours · Easy. The classic Pokhara mini-adventure: row across Phewa Lake, climb the forest trail to the gleaming white pagoda, and walk back down around the lake's southern end (or row back). The view over the lake, city and Annapurna wall is the best free panorama in town.

Sarangkot — Half Day to Overnight

2–3 hours up · Easy-moderate. Hike from the lake's northern end up the stone-stepped ridge trail to Sarangkot village. Most people taxi up for sunrise, but walking up the afternoon before and overnighting on the ridge is the smarter play — sunrise from your guesthouse rooftop, then an easy walk down.

Australian Camp & Dhampus — 1–2 Days

4–6 hours · Easy-moderate. Possibly the best effort-to-view ratio in Nepal. Drive 45 minutes to Kande, climb about 90 minutes to Australian Camp, a meadow with full-spread Annapurna and Machhapuchhre views, then continue to the traditional Gurung village of Dhampus and down to Phedi. Doable in a day; far better with a night at the camp for sunset and sunrise.

Panchase Trek — 2–3 Days

Moderate. A quiet loop southwest of the lake through rhododendron forest and traditional villages to Panchase peak (2,500 m), with a panorama stretching from Dhaulagiri to Manaslu. Sees a fraction of the Annapurna foot traffic — this is the one for travellers who want trails to themselves.

Ghorepani–Poon Hill — 3–4 Days

Moderate. The famous one, and deservedly so: stone staircases through Gurung villages, rhododendron forest (spectacular in March–April), and the dawn ascent of Poon Hill (3,210 m) for one of the great Himalayan sunrises. Teahouses the whole way; no camping, no technical terrain. Most itineraries run Nayapul → Ghorepani → Poon Hill → Ghandruk → Nayapul.
