Best Time to Visit Nepal — Season by Season

The short answer: October–November for the classic experience, March–April as the equal-but-different runner-up. But Nepal has no bad month — only trade-offs — and the "wrong" seasons hide some of the country's best moments. Here's the honest breakdown.

The Four Seasons

Autumn (October–November) — The Gold Standard

Monsoon rains have washed the sky clean; mountain views are at their sharpest, temperatures are ideal, and the trekking trails are in perfect condition. This is also festival season — Dashain and Tihar light up the whole country. The catch: everyone knows it. Trails, flights and the best hotels fill well in advance, and Poon Hill at sunrise feels sociable, to put it kindly.

Spring (March–April) — Rhododendrons and Warmth

The second peak season. Views are slightly hazier than autumn, but the hillsides compensate by erupting in rhododendron bloom — entire forests in red and pink at trekking altitudes. Warmer low-altitude temperatures make this the best window for Chitwan safaris too, as wildlife concentrates near water.

Winter (December–February) — Clear, Cold, Quiet

Skies stay remarkably clear; it's simply cold up high. Low-altitude treks (Poon Hill, Australian Camp) are excellent with the right layers, and Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan are entirely pleasant. High passes like Thorong La close or become serious undertakings. The reward for the cold: trails and hotels nearly to yourself, and crisp mountain light photographers dream about.

Monsoon (June–September) — The Green Secret

Daily rains, leeches on the trails, mountains hidden in cloud — and yet. The hills are impossibly green, waterfalls thunder, hotel prices drop by half, and the rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang, Dolpo) are at their best, sitting north of the weather entirely. City-and-culture trips work fine between showers.

Month-by-Month Cheat Sheet

| Month | Trekking | Views | Crowds | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Oct–Nov | Excellent | Best | Heavy | Dashain & Tihar festivals | | Dec–Feb | Good (low routes) | Excellent | Light | Cold at altitude | | Mar–Apr | Excellent | Good | Heavy | Rhododendron bloom | | May | Fair | Hazy | Moderate | Hot lowlands, pre-monsoon | | Jun–Sep | Poor (except Mustang) | Poor | Minimal | Lush, cheap, wet |

Match the Season to Your Trip

  • First trip, classic highlights → October–November (book early) or March–April.
  • Trekking on a budget or in solitude → early December or late February.
  • Wildlife in Chitwan → February–April.
  • Upper Mustang / Dolpo → June–September, counterintuitively.
  • Festivals → Dashain/Tihar (Oct–Nov), Holi (March), Indra Jatra in Kathmandu (September).
